Description

This elegant Bastiano sofa was designed by Tobia and Afra Scarpa in 1962 and produced by Gavine. The three-seater sofa is made of black natural leather. The frame of the basket is made of rosewood with a beautiful grain, showing the variety of shades and movements of the wood. The sofa is very comfortable thanks to the thick cushions that fall into the frame. The frame acts like a basket that holds thick, comfortable pillows together. The back of this piece of furniture is linear making this sofa perfect to be placed centrally in the place that is most appreciated. The Bastiano line is a timeless project. The comfortable appearance matched well with modern and traditional interiors and was one of the most successful designs of this period. Although the Bastiano Lounge models are no longer produced, some designers cite them as an important design point. Mainly due to the successful harmony of soft pillows and a hard exoskeleton.

Afra and Tobia Scarpa are an award-winning duo of postmodern Italian architects. Their works can be found in museums in the United States and Europe, including collections at MoMA and the Louvre. They have cooperated with companies such as B&B Italia, San Lorenzo Silver and Knoll International. They have won numerous awards, such as the Compasso d’Oro in 1969 at the International Forum Design in 1992. Their design work covers architecture and everyday objects including furniture, interior design and art glass. In their projects, they focused on the technical and aesthetic possibilities of materials. The couple was strongly influenced by Tobia’s father, Carlo Scarpa, a Venetian architect and designer. In the early 1960s Tobia started designing modern furniture based on the principles of Le Corbusier. He and his wife, Afra, have designed for some of the biggest names in Italian design, including Cassina and Gavina.
