Description
This Cosmos coffee table was designed by Sven Engström and Gunnar Myrstrand for the Swedish Tingströms manufacture during the 1960s. It is made of teak wood, which is extremely resistant to external factors and owes its longevity mainly to a specific composition, rich in oily substances and silicic acid. The table has a simple form characteristic for design idea of the Mid-Century Modern era.
Gunnar Myrstrand and Sven Engström are a duo of Swedish furniture designers who founded an interior design company in the late 1940s. Both were also furniture design teachers. They have appeared at many exhibitions, such as the Helsingborg exhibition, H 55, showcasing the interior design of the room. They collaborated with the Swedish Handicraft Association as exhibition architects. Myrstrand represented Sweden at the Milan Triennial in 1954 and worked at the Rörstrand Porcelain Factory in Lidköping. Engström was a member of the Bra Bohag association and in 1952 he designed the Ideal furniture series for Skaraborgs Möbelindustri, and in 1961 Skandinett for Svenska möbelfabrikerna. Together, they worked for Nässjö Stolfabrik, Gemla Möbler, Skaraborgs möbelindustri, Källemo and Tingströms.
Tingströms is a Swedish furniture manufacturer that gained international recognition in the 1950s and 1960s as one of the pillars of the Swedish Modern style. Tingströms’s greatest fame came from its collaboration with the architect duo Sven Engström and Gunnar Myrstrand. Their designs are characterized by purity of form, functionality, and the use of noble materials, primarily teak and oak. Tingströms furniture often bears the distinctive Bra Bohag (literally meaning Good Home Furnishings) label. This was an elite association of Swedish manufacturers and designers dedicated to promoting high-quality design and facilitating customers’ access to the finest everyday objects. Tingströms’s offerings also included designs by other esteemed designers, such as Folke Ohlsson (Frisco series) and Alf Svensson.
