Lars Hellström was born in Uppsala in 1936. Hellström’s paintings show his passion for the lithographic printing process, which emerged early when he was a student at Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design. In addition to specializing in art prints, he is also a painter and collaborates with public art commissions. In the 1940s and 1950s, artistic influence came mainly from the United States, specifically New York as the cultural epicenter of the world. In the 1960s, Lars Hellström was referring to the abstract expressionist movement, more specifically the so-called New York School – an informal group of musicians, poets, and artists who worked with free forms, colors, and movements such as Jackson Pollock and his action painting. The group also included the painter Barnett Newman, whom Hellström particularly admired. Lars Hellström’s early 1960s work was abstract before he moved on to more detailed, figurative images. Typical of this period is his series Södra Valsätra – my family community, consisting of a total of seven lithographs. Hellström and his family moved in the 1970s from the center of Uppsala to the newly built suburb of Valsätra / Gottsunda. It was the stereotypical building design of the so-called Million Program that inspired the Valsätra series. After the period of real landscape images, i.e. close-ups and naturalistic representations of various patterns and types of rocks on the cliffs of the Stockholm archipelago, Lars Hellström returned to non-figurative motifs. He works now mainly with variations on recurring themes and the interplay of angles, lines and directions.
